APPLIED THEORIES
This course explores the varied theoretical bases for
psycho-dynamic, humanistic, behavioural, cognitive, developmental,
aesthetic and eclectic approaches to art therapy from both a didactic
and experiential perspective. Students will achieve a working knowledge
of the similarities and differences of the various theoretical
constructs and explore practical applications of these various
approaches to art therapy.
(SDS) ATH 502 [1.5 units]
ART THERAPY CLINICAL APPLICATIONS
This 10-week, 3.5-hour-a-week, self-directed course with online support is designed to provide an overview
of the different clinical approaches and the art therapy ethical elements that combine to
form the basis of the practicing art therapist’s values and beliefs.
(Jan) ATH 503 [1.5 units]
ART AND
PSYCHOPATHOLOGY
Through a series of case studies, readings, discussion
and assignments this course examines the relationship between art,
pathology, creativity and healing. The intent of the course is to
provide the student with the opportunity to develop their concept of
the progression and application of Art Therapy.
ATH 504 [3 units]
PRACTICUM 1
Students are introduced to a supervised clinical
experience. All aspects of work directly related to client
contact will be included. Students will participate in group and
individual art therapy supervision. They will present case material
from their practicum placements and undertake relevant readings. There
will be provision for self evaluation and discussion with peers and
supervisors of experience in the field. The goal is to increase
the students' ability to evaluate their own effectiveness. 150 client
contact hours, ATH504C
- one case study/participant review required.
(May/Sept.) ATH 505A/B [3 units]
STUDIO A, B
This course is experientially based and is the
foundation of practicum training. It will give participants the
opportunity to actively explore
their own Art Therapy process under the
direction of a professional Art Therapist, and to integrate this
experiential process into currently used conceptual frameworks for
clinical practice.
Classes will focus on both the intrapersonal and interpersonal Art
Therapy process through instructor-led art making, small group
debriefing sessions and class discussions dealing with theory,
technique and clinical practice.
ATH 554 [3–4 units]
PRACTICUM 2
Students can choose from a variety of
agency/community settings. Diploma students: 145 client contact hours,
no case study required. Certificate students: 200 client contact hours,
one case study required. ATH554C
- one case study required for certificate students.
Note: Certificate students who do not have previous supervised
clinical practicums of 150 hours or more at a graduate level before entering the program will be
required to complete Practicum 1, 2 and 3 with the same requirements
as the Diploma students.
The BC School of Art Therapy abides
by the practicum guidelines set
out by the BC Art Therapy Association. Included are guidelines for
specific hours of direct client contact, minimum required hours of
direct supervision, and other hours. Overall the Post-Bachelor's Diploma
requires a total of 800 hours and the Post-Master's Certificate requires
a total of 700 hours.
ATH 555 [3 units]
PRACTICUM 3
Diploma students: 145 client
contact hours. ATH555C
- one case study required.
(Jan.) ATH 556 [1.5 units]
STUDIO C

students will also learn to both participate in and reflect on the
application of art therapy in a group setting.
(SDS/Campus) ATH 557 [3 units]
