Core Courses

ATH 501 [1.5] APPLIED THEORIES OF ART THERAPY

This course explores the varied theoretical bases for psycho-dynamic, humanistic, behavioural, cognitive, developmental, aesthetic and eclectic approaches to art therapy from both a didactic and experiential perspective. Students will achieve a working knowledge of the similarities and differences of the various theoretical constructs and explore practical applications of these various approaches to art therapy.

ATH 558 [1.5] ART THERAPY WITH CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

An experiential and didactic introduction to the use of Art Therapy with children.

ATH 503 [1.5] ART AND PSYCHOPATHOLOGY

Through a series of case studies, readings, discussion and assignments this course examines the relationship between art, pathology, creativity and healing. The intent of the course is to provide the student with the opportunity to develop their concept of the progression and application of Art Therapy
* Pre-requisite: Abnormal Psychology.

ATH 559 [1–1.5] ART THERAPY WITH FAMILIES

An introduction to the use of art therapy with families.

ATH 505 [3] STUDIO

This course is experientially based and is the foundation of practicum training. It will give participants the opportunity to actively explore their own Art Therapy process under the direction of a professional Art Therapist, and to integrate this experiential process into currently used conceptual frameworks for clinical practice.
Classes will focus on both the intrapersonal and interpersonal Art Therapy process through instructor-led art making, small group debriefing sessions and class discussions dealing with theory, technique and clinical practice.

ATH 556 [3] SENIOR STUDIO

This studio provides an opportunity for students to deepen their personal exploration of Art Therapy, incorporating the theories, hypotheses and insights of the basic treatment process through art. Senior students will view the group process from an experienced position and develop some leadership roles within the group.
Students will be expected to read and discuss literature from Art Therapy and related fields, and will experience fundamental ways of being a therapist.

ATH 504 [3] PRACTICUM I

Students are introduced to a supervised clinical experience with clients in an open studio and artist-in-residence mental health setting. All aspects of work directly related to client contact will be included. Students will participate in group and individual art therapy supervision. They will present case material from their practicum placements and undertake relevant readings. There will be provision for self evaluation and discussion with peers and supervisors of experience in the field. The goal is to increase students' ability to evaluate their own effectiveness. 150 client contact hours and 1 case study are required.

ATH 554 [3] PRACTICUM II

As in Practicum I, with choice from a variety of agency/community settings. Diploma students: 145 client contact hours, no case study required. Certificate students: 150 client contact hours, one case study required.
Pre-requisite: Supervised clinical practicum of 150 hours or more. Certificate Program students who do not have previous supervised clinical practicums of 150 hours or more at a graduate level will be required to complete Practicum I.

ATH 555 [3–4] PRACTICUM III

As in Practicum I. Diploma students: 145 client contact hours, one case study required. Certificate students: 200 client contact hours, one case study required.
The BC School of Art Therapy abides by the practicum guidelines set out by the BC Art Therapy Association. Included are guidelines for specific hours of direct client contact, minimum required hours of direct supervision, and other hours. Overall the Diploma Program requires a total of 800 hours and the Certificate Program requires a total of 700 hours.

ATH 557 [3] THESIS/RESEARCH

Thesis/Research projects are guided by supervisors by means of tutorials, committees and individual advisory time.

  1. Thesis: The student may write an extensive paper based on a hypothesis related to an area of study in Art Therapy. The thesis may include the design of a practical model based on a unique approach. The student will present the thesis orally to supervisors and students.
  2. Theoretical Research: The student may select an area of study in the literature in the field of Art Therapy and design and implement a research project within their intended area of exploration.

ELECTIVE COURSES

ATH 562 [.5–1.5] SPECIAL TOPICS IN ART THERAPY

The School offers short elective courses throughout the year and topics vary from year to year depending on instructor availability. Instructors are practising expressive Art Therapists offering courses in their area of expertise.
Diploma students complete approximately 6 units of elective courses during their training. Certificate students complete approximately 4 units of elective courses.
These courses also serve the professional Art Therapy community in the area of professional development.
